i spent a bit of today pulling together some of the images I created + more importantly enjoyed creating in 2013. i'm not going to adulterate this post with calling it the "best of"' or anything like that. in fact there's not a whole lot of rhyme or reason to the sequence of images. there's a scattering here. my only rules for submission (to myself) was did I create this within the last 12 months....(yes) + do i like it + want to show it? pretty simple stuff. a few are from my more lifestylistic portrait sessions.... (quite possibly one of my favorite things to shoot) + a few are from a pretty epic roadtrip i took this summer from nyc to the west coast via texas. so it's a pretty mixed bag. kinda like my year was. i'm updating the portfolio portion of my site with almost all new work in a few weeks... so i'll save my newer wedding work for that. until then... here's a little of what i saw + spent my time on the past year.... for abundance . for light . for strangers . for adventure . for conversations . for comfort . for common ground . for hesitation . for pause . for wisdom . for promise . for change . for all the people my life's come into contact with this last year . i'm so very grateful . happy everything to you + yours . brooke
the first time i went to the desert i understood this magical pull it can have on a person. that energy that people talk about... i got it. i loved the bone dry healing heat. the soft hued pinks + pales greens of the landscape. it had an alluring draw on me + from my first visit i knew i wanted to spend more time there... as a recent belated birthday present to myself i returned for two days of utter solitude. life's been maddening these last few months... its been chaotic. + loud. + full of uncertainties + unknowns. i wanted to gift myself some peace + quiet. some alone time.
i turned 33 last week. never one to have too much constancy in life, the rug's being pulled out once again + things are churning... changing. this will be a year of great changes. so i wanted a minute to pull it all in. to think. to breathe. there's no more perfect place than the desert. here's a few photos from my getaway. i found the most perfect oasis + really didn't want to leave. get yourself to the desert if you can. there's a magic there unlike anywhere.
these photos were taken at Korakia Pensione. a quiet haven of peaceful tranquility + beauty.
this past weekend marked one of my all time favorite NYC events.... the bi-annual jazz age lawn party on governors island... i absolutely love how into this thing New Yorker's get... young + old people get so decked out that you really do think you're in another era entirely... i spent the entire day picnicking on a blanket, drinking fancy 20's era inspired st. germain cocktails, + enjoying some of the best people watching ever. i did a full color post last year when i went which can be seen here : but this year i opted for showing my images in bw... if you ever happen to find yourself in NYC in june or august you have to go... it's such great fun!
someone asked me recently what i liked doing in my spare time. i laughed at first + said "what spare time?"... but then paused to think more seriously about it. "honestly" I answered, " I love experiencing New York City. I love finding out what's going on. finding out new restaurants, art shows, outdoor movies, museums, flea markets + etc." it's one of my favorite things about living here. there's always some cool to do. always. slowly but surely i'm checking things off of my list. the jazz age lawn festival on governor's island is something i've always heard about but didn't get a chance to finally check out till this year. i'm going to go ahead + say that it is just about the most favorite thing i've done yet in this city. roaring 20's themed lawn party, live jazz + people dressed to the nines like only New Yorker's could pull off. the people watching was amazing... champagne + st. germain cocktails were flowing non stop. old timey dancing, flapper styles, ragtime looks, a classic car show, a vintage swimsuit contest, + the most great gatsby-esque party you've ever attended. anyways, here's the photos.... + a link incase you want to know more. if you're ever in NYC in June or August, you simply must put it on your list!
good morning! here's aven + i over the weekend... shockingly i'm actually terrible about taking out the camera on a regular basis to take pictures of her... but i've had in mind for a while that it'd be fun to set up my wedding photobooth in my living room + do some snaps of her. here's my fave... it's so americana. speaking of shooting for myself, i'm a huge huge huge fan of instagram. it's hands down my favorite app + way of following those i love through their daily photos! i love how it's made all sorts of people fall in love with photography all over again... + trains the eye to shoot square. lately i've been really taken with shooting a whole lot of NYC with my phone. i feel like one day if i move, i'm going to regret not having taken more street photography while i lived here... so i'm curating a little obsession with instagram-ing my daily brooklyn life. i thought i'd share some of my recent snaps here... + yes, i drink a lot of coffee + love taking photos of it. so cliché i know... anyways, if you're not on instagram you can follow my feed here... or by clicking the button below. happy monday! xo, brooke
Saturday's wedding was a masquerade ball themed wedding... How apropo for Halloween. Couldn't resist posting this... one of their bridal party portraits...
this little one was born. here's what i've learned...
- c-sections are horrible things to recover from
- i don't really need as much sleep as i thought i needed
- sleeping less isn't really all that bad at all
- babies are very time consuming...
- it's really really really hard being a workin' mama
- it's scary being a parent... + expensive
- i miss going to movies + out for dinner + drinks without arranging for babysitting...
- the new identity of "mama" had been hard to wrap my head around...
- but mainly...
- i never knew it was possible to feel so head over heels in love with someone so small. as someone i know recently said : "she's my favorite thing to do"
because my camera is heavy... + my iphone camera is so awesome-sauce... i've found that i rarely take around my camera with me for personal use. i miss this. i used to carry it everywhere. so rather than quietly lament the fact, i brought it out this past sunday when my sister was up visiting + took a few snaps of our day. i love hanging out in williamsburg on sundays... actually scratch that... i mainly just love sundays. lazy mornings, brunch, bloody mary's, flea markets, long walks, shopping, good coffee, sometimes a movie or a museum. deciding the clear sundays + take them off of work was really one of the best business decisions ever. makes me so much more ready + revived for the week ahead. anyways, bakeri is just about my favorite place ever to hang out (i'm actually about to head there now for a meeting!) they've got amazing baked goods, sandwiches + such an authentically parisienne feel. roberta's pizza is around the corner from where i live. it's always bustling especially as the chef just got named food + wine's best of 2011. while they're know for their pizza, it's their blue bottle cold brewed iced coffee (nola style) that I stepped in for this past very hot + humid sunday. i'm committed to bringing my camera out more + documenting my day to days... look out! xo,
