there's a million things that have been written about this very topic, but i've been giving some thought lately to what some of the things are that i try + do, + i thought that i'd share. if you're an artist, or a generally creative person, then i think you can relate to dry spells. barren periods when you feel just a little burnt out on what you're doing artistically. as a freelancer in a creative industry i pour out a lot + it's important to refill that reservoir from time to time. i was feeling a little bored with my photography for some time + made some strides this year to remedy that.
firstly i paid to be mentored. this may sound funny since i'm no longer an up + comer in this industry, but i think the fact that you can never stop learning about photography is such a beautiful thing. i found two photographers who's work + editing style was inspiring to me. i paid for sessions with them both to either see how they shot, or how they edited. what they did for their workflow... picked their brains to pieces. i found it really inspiring to get another perspective. to learn from peers in my industry. in addition to feeling inspired by them, i picked up some really useful tools too... that are in part making me a better photographer.
secondly, i took a trip. a cross country road trip. but not just any cross country trip. my girlfriend + i had to get from NYC to Seattle, but we went by way of Austin. the trip wasn't only about getting from A to B, but was also about what we could see along the way. we stopped through Nashville, New Oreans, Austin, Marfa, Albuquerque, Moab, + Boise. we took photos everywhere. i shot a lot of film. a lot of pull apart, manually meter + focus polaroids. it was epic. + visually stimulating for me.
thirdly, I'm making it a point to shoot more personal work. this i don't think needs an explanation.
in addition, i've been buying a lot of magazines. + watching a lot of movies. yes i enjoy these things... but i also research the imagery. how things are shot. angle, perspectives, lighting. i don't look at much other wedding photography, but as a lover of photos I am constantly feeding a steady stream of inspirational visuals into my head.
lastly, i turn off the computer after 7. i don't work on sundays if i can help it. i take yoga. i take walks + listen to lots of good music.
